The Burnet High School girls soccer team crushed Austin Northeast 4-0 Feb. 13 and Jarrell 3-0 Feb. 10 in District 25-4A play.

The victories mean the Lady Dawgs are leading the district’s large school division.

Brooke Oliva led the Lady Dawgs with two goals against Northeast and two against Jarrell. Emily Montoya and Avery Barth each scored a goal against Northeast, while Bella Medina had the other goal against Jarrell.

Emma Warden and Lillian Barnard had the assists.

Head coach Doug Ketcham noted the Lady Dawgs were challenged in both matches.

Against Northeast, Burnet led 1-0 at the half.

“We weren’t shooting very well,” he said. “We took 41 shots, but I can only assume maybe half of those were in the first half. It was really windy, and we had the wind at our backs, which I feel like we play better with the wind in our face for some reason.”

At the half, the coach gave his players some insight.

“They’re only one breakaway from tying the game up,” he said. “The second half, we kind of buckled down and took care of business pretty well.”

Meanwhile, the defense continued to post shutouts with Burnet’s third in a row.

“Defensively, we played well both games, particularly the Jarrell game,” Ketcham said. “They have a little more firepower than Northeast. We controlled the game; we just could not buy a goal in the first half besides the one.”

Northeast took only two shots, while Jarrell attempted 19. Still, the Lady Dawgs kept the Lady Cougars off the scoreboard.

“We were able to weather the storm with them,” Ketcham said. “It’s about limiting those opportunities, and the other thing we’ve talked about is just where those shots come in from.
We really don’t want them coming down the middle. We want to make it more predictable.
So if we can get them at an angle towards the goal, I feel like that gives us a good opportunity to win.”

The Lady Dawgs host Dallas Oak Cliff Faith Family Academy Tuesday, Feb. 17, in non-district play with the varsity playing at 4 p.m. and the junior varsity to follow.

Then Burnet welcomes Austin LBJ (2-7, 2-7) Friday, Feb. 20, with the junior varsity playing at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
